A lively discussion has been posted up on the LinkedIn group UK Thermography Association warning anyone carrying out thermal surveys in the UK to beware of bogus callers for domestic surveys where upon arrival, thermographers are mugged by masked men at knife-point.

A FLIR P660 camera like this was stolen at knife-point

Tim Mammatt, business development manager at iRed Thermal Imaging, has had a report of two incidents in the past month, of thermographers attending what was thought to be a legitimate domestic survey.

“Their personal belongings, FLIR P660 IR Camera and keys to their vehicle were taken. This happened in North West London area,” says Tim.

“We would like warn other Thermographers out there that this is a threat and to be cautious when undertaking domestic surveys, so hopefully a similar incident will not occur again.”

Rachael Browning, sales and marketing manager of Ti Thermal Imaging, added that names to look out for were Benjimun Obigini and Jack Willow.

She says: “We were contacted to conduct a domestic survey at Ilford in North London. After asking a few questions it looked highly suspicious so we refused the job. We have spoken to a couple of consultants and they have had similar experiences, but this is the first we have heard of incidents that have actually taken place.”

Mark Colyer, managing director of ScanTherm, reported having had the same experience twice as Rachael from someone called Ben for surveys at the same postcode, “and also declined as it didn't ring true.”

Paul Goodbody, senior thermographer at IRISS, reveals: “I was the guy that was attacked and the guy was called Ben. Not a pleasant experience but please people take extra care out there. (Camera still missing but we have the van back.)”

He continues: “The Crime Reference Number is 4411087/14. This investigation is being dealt by DC Lai. He is available on 0208 345 2679.”

One member of the group suggested advising the group of the serial number of the camera, “then if any of us are approached with a cut price P660, we can advise the authorities.”

So if any of our readers out there are offered a FLIR Model P660 with serial number 404001876, please get in touch with DC Lai at the contact number above. It may also still have two lenses in the carrying case: 24 degree/38 mm and 45 degree/19 mm.
